Our group develops multidimensional mass spectrometry methodologies for the analysis of the composition, structure, and architecture of synthetic polymers. Top-down approaches, utilizing ion mobility mass spectrometry and tandem mass spectrometry, are employed to characterize supramolecular polymers and polymer-protein (or polymer-peptide) conjugates. Bottom-up methods, involving mild thermal desorption/degradation and multistage mass spectrometry, are used to identify large or cross-linked polymers. LC-MS approaches, combining interactive or size-exclusion chromatography with mass spectrometry detection, are optimized for the separation and identification of complex copolymer mixtures. Methods for the analysis and imaging of polymer and biological surfaces are also investigated.
