The PMSE division is excited to be conducting the final competition for the 2016 Eastman Chemical Student Award in Applied Polymer Science. In this technical session, at the fall 2016 national meeting of the American Chemical Society in Philadelphia (Tuesday, August 23, 1:30 - 4:50pm, Independence Ballroom B, Sheraton Downtown), each finalist will deliver a technical presentation on their doctoral research. This award was initiated by the PMSE division in 1985 to honor the best paper and presentation by a student at or near the completion of their Ph.D. in a polymer related field. This prestigious award has been sponsored by the Sherwin Williams Company (1985-96), ICI (1997-2008 ), AkzoNobel (2009-2013), and the Eastman Chemical Company (since 2014).
The following applicants have been selected as this year’s finalists:
In the final competition, the awardee will be selected based on the quality of his/her oral presentation. A special thanks to the Ph. D. advisors for each of these contestants and to all those who assisted in the selection of the 2016 finalists. The winner of this award, selected by the judges following the final competition, will be announced following the conclusion of the national meeting.
The PMSE division greatly appreciates Eastman’s sponsorship and involvement in the management of this prestigious award. A special thanks to Jason Jenkins, who serves as rotating chair of the award committee and key technical representative at the Eastman Chemical Company.

Dr. Leslie Howard Sperling, one of the founding members of the Polymer Science & Engineering program at Lehigh University, died at his home on February 1, 2016. Les will perhaps be most remembered for his pioneering work on polymer blends and specifically interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs). Later in life, he focused on polymer nomenclature and the addition of polymer science to traditional chemistry courses. Les was very active in ACS and belonged to the POLY/PMSE Polymer Education Committee and the ACS Nomenclature Committee. He also served PMSE as a Member at Large. Les was selected as a PMSE Fellow in 2002 and as an ACS Fellow in 2010. In 2012, PMSE honored Les with their Distinguished Service Award.
