Message from the Chair

Jamil Baghdachi

Dear PMSE Division Members:

The PMSE Division continues to focus on Polymeric Materials Science and Engineering issues that relate to the chemical sciences, including molecules of intermediate and smaller sizes.  The Division is in excellent is condition due to the hard work of the dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers on the Executive Committee, other committees and members at the national and regional meetings, as well as the loyally of our 4500+ members. I thank you all for the contributions you have made and will make in the coming years! We need everyone’s involvement in order to realize our vision: Reaching out across technical disciplines, generational, and international boundaries to create the premier home of material science and engineering for the global chemistry community.

We have taken strides to meet goals supporting our vision and strategic plan. The Division’s international outreach is in its third year with the Chinese Chemical Society which began in 2012 with a meeting in Changdu, 2013 in New Orleans and Shanghai. The fourth and fifth meetings have been scheduled in San Francisco and Suzhou, China. PMSE also has a strong local impact; we provide support for regional meetings as well as a variety of technical programming activities that focus on topics of interest to our membership. PMSE Technical Programing Committee will continue programing format to capture emerging trends in polymers and material science and rotate topics of high interest “hot topics” in a continuous base for global chemistry community. These include biopolymers, nano-materials, polymeric coatings, green chemistry and sustainable materials and many new emerging technologies. The PMSE Division continues to work with the POLY Division on items of mutual interest, including a joint poster session the national meetings and joint PMSE/POLY student chapters.

If you are interested in getting involved in PMSE activities please let us know, there are many opportunities for volunteers to contribute their time and energy to help promote the goals of the Division. We do our best to keep information about PMSE continually updated on the Web (pmse.sites.acs.org), and we also have a presence on FaceBook and Twitter. Please visit these sites and give us constructive feedback. We are currently working on a listing of links to other technical societies that share common interests with our PMSE membership, for example.

We have prepared an exciting set of symposia for the spring 2014 American Chemical Society Meeting in Dallas, to be held March 16-20th. As always, tremendous thanks are due to the PMSE technical programming committee, which works diligently to organize outstanding programming for the benefit of PMSE members.  Let me also use this opportunity to thank the efforts of Eileen Ernst, who alongside of PMSE volunteers has provided administrative support for the past several years.

I’m looking forward to the opportunity to meet many of you at the meeting in Dallas and other annual meetings
